The Flower District is alive and well in the Chelsea neighborhood although it has gotten a lot smaller in the last twenty years. Rezoned for residential and commercial in a new way, most of the lower part of Sixth Avenue from West 34th to West 23rd Streets has changed dramatically with new residential high rises being built along the avenue. Still on the side streets, small ‘Mom & Pop” businesses still thrive making this area a haven for fresh cut flowers, potted plants, garden equipment & accessories and many floral gifts and arrangements.
Foliage Paradise at 113-115 West 28th Street in the heart of the “Flower District”
What I liked about Foliage Paradise is the welcoming you get by just looking in the front window and seeing all the colorful orchids that line the windows with pinks, purples and white hues showing their graceful beauty lining the shelves around the front room.
The orchids are a welcoming greeting from the tropics
As you enter the store from both store fronts, you are greeted by rows and rows of potted plants like palms, fichus, pine, and rubber trees and rows and rows of ferns and other hot house plants. Walking down the straight aisles makes one feel like you are walking through a rain forest or a favorite botanical garden.
The hot house trees make you feel like you are walking through a jungle
The back of the store is lined with interesting cactus and other desert plants.
The service was somewhat absent when I visited the store several times but this is a store where you can come in with a decorators eye and a gardener’s imagination with the availability of interesting plants. On the outside of the store, you will find rows of pansies, lettuces, ferns, herbs, mums, celosia, croton, flowering kale, ornamental pepper and viola that line the sidewalks and entrance. Inside you will find the large hot house trees, azaleas, cactus and the orchids. You will need to talk to the sales people on prices and delivery.
Just walking around the store for the afternoon is a treat to itself. You will need to talk to the sales people on the prices as most plants were not marked. It is a nice store to just walk around and experience the foliage of another time zone.
Don’t miss this trip to the tropics in Manhattan.
